Theology Live at the Ginger Man Pub

10:05 pm | Announcement | Emergent Church

The Uptown Church (aka The Church of the Incarnation) is hosting its annual Theology Live this June. Theology Live features spirited conversations - which is to say, theological discussions over alcohol. Like last year, Theology Live is being held at the Ginger Man Pub in Dallas’ Uptown - a historical district just north of downtown Dallas. The discussions will be as follows:

  • June 5th: Deciphering DaVinci. Is there a code?
  • June 12th: Can’t We All Just Get Along? Liberal and conservative Christians: understanding the spectrum.
  • June 19th: Holy Fear? Terrorism and Christianity.
  • June 26th: Shaking Hands With The Devil. Considering the demonic and its implications.

The discussions start at 7PM and usually run for an hour, with a Q&A time following.

Personally, I’m looking forward to this. Last year’s Theology Live seemed to go by so quickly, and I enjoyed the fellowship during the time. It was in many respects the way that missional approaches to culture should be done, but too often aren’t. At the same time though, it reminds me of the real limits of contextualized missional approaches to culture, and that contextualization alone is not sufficient - lessons I learned last year when I attended Theology Live. The gospel still penetrates hearts even when all our best contextualization and missional approaches fail. This is one of the reasons that I am hesitant to jump on board wholeheartedly with the kinds of missional approaches that are popular in the emerging church - because I know that experiments in contextualization will fail, but the gospel is always powerful to penetrate hearts.

Meanwhile, however, I am looking forward to a spirited theological discussion with friends over a pint of Paulaner Oktoberfest, or a Dogfish Head Ale, or even the old Texas favorite Shiner Bock. Do all things to the glory of God, and do them with excellence.
