Are Moments of Silence Violations of the Separation of Church and State?

Is having a mandatory moment of silence in a public school a violation of the separation of church and state? Apparently so, according to a fellow student at the University of Texas at Dallas who is petitioning to have moments of silence in a Texas public elementary school ruled unconstitutional.
